I took my dog, Choca, to a holistic vet for the first time. While the vet did not want to do an on-camera interview about her work, I learned so much that I decided to share. One of my biggest concerns was learning that Mars, Inc. has bout $9.1 billion worth of veterinary clinics. Since the candy company also makes pet food, including the prescription brands vets often recommend, I felt it necessary to alert the public that this is the case. Diet is often cited by holistic vets as THE MOST IMPORTANT aspect of your pet's health care, so it is something that should be researched and taken seriously. VCA and Banfield are two big chains owned by Mars. Below are some helpful links. Though we saw a local vet, I've also added a link to information from Dr. Karen Becker, who is a holistic vet with a wealth of knowledge from whom I have learned a ton.

Preventing disease is the foundation of any healthcare system be you a human, dog or cat! So what then is the difference between holistic vet care vs traditional vet care? The distinction made by “alternative” veterinary practitioners that they provide holistic vet care and “conventional” or "traditional" veterinarians simply treat the disease symptoms.

Is this true or (like most things) is it a bit more complicated than that?

To discuss this we first need to understand what holistic means. Well, holistic veterinary medicine is characterized by the treatment of the whole individual, including their environment, diet and lifestyle, rather than just considering and treating the symptoms of the specific disease.

Have you ever asked yourself what actually ticks are, how they get on our dogs and us, and what can we do to protect our dogs and us the natural way?

In the UK ticks have become more abundant and have extended their distribution in Europe during the last two to three decades. Changes in farming, global warming, more animals moving around and across the borders, all contribute to this.

Years ago, you might have only come across ticks in rural and wood areas but these days we’re at risk of tick bites when spending time in public areas like parks, beer gardens, picnic spots, gardens, while camping, cycling, running, or doing any outdoor activities.

Ticks don’t jump like fleas. They have a different approach…they wait, patiently in the grass, or bushes or other vegetation. And when their target approaches they just drop themselves on.

Ticks operate mainly by using their sense of smell. Ticks don’t jump or fall from trees; instead, they do something called “questing.” That is, they climb to the top of a blade of grass or plant and stick their front legs up in the air, waiting for the scent of a victim walking by. If you find one on your head, then it crawled there (ticks don’t jump) .

Their front pair of legs have what are called Haller’s organs, which detect smell, temperature, movement and carbon dioxide. This is how they know you’re coming. They love warmth and moisture and are just waiting for a warm, moist environment to call home, such as your dog!

OMG OMG OMG you guys we are doing PUP Pilates with my very first, very own PUPPY!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! If your dog has arthritis or joint pain, nothing outperforms glucosamine. But, there's a big problem with glucosamine supplements you need to know about.

Glucosamine is a natural substance that your dog naturally makes. But when dogs get older, they produce less of it, which is why a lot of dogs develop arthritis as they age. And that's a problem because glucosamine helps repair joint cartilage, and keeps the right consistency in the synovial fluid that lubricates the joints. So if there's not enough glucosamine, your dog can develop sharp, jaggedy edges on the bones in his joints and the fluid inside the joint will be sticky - and this means pain, stiffness and lack of mobility.

The #1 food based source of glucosamine would be green lipped mussels. They naturally contain really large amounts of glucosamine and chondroitin. The really cool thing about green lipped mussels is that they're COX inhibitors just like prescription joint meds are … so they offer the same anti-inflammatory benefits. But unlike prescription joint meds, they also contain LOX inhibitors so they don't harm the liver and gut lining. Green lipped mussels can take a little longer to work in your dog, but it's totally worth it because they're much safer than prescription meds - plus, a good GLM powder will contain a good helping of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fats. Just make sure they're So how well do green lipped mussels work? A 2007 study on dogs found that 3/4 of them didn't need any other joint or pain meds. But the green lipped mussels must be at least 5% fat to see those great results. Give 400mg for every 25 pounds of weight. Dogs love the taste, so you can just sprinkle it right on food.

Coming in at a really close second is eggshell membrane - which is also called NEM. This is the delicate little lining on the insides of egg shells. NEM is a natural source of glucosamine, along with other joint friendly proteins like chondroitin and hyaluronic acid. The cool thing about NEM is that it's been clinically tested and found to decrease pain and stiffness and reduce pain in people with arthritis. The dose for NEM is 150mg per 25 pounds. It's a good idea to double the dose for the first 10 days or so to get best results.

You can also use certain foods to get more glucosamine into your dog. This isn't as sophisticated as green lipped mussels or NEM because there isn't the same research and there's no tested amount that's been shown to work … but here are some common foods that are rich in glucosamine.

First is bone broth. You can buy bone broth in stores or make it yourself … but just be careful because bones are where lead, heavy metals and herbicides like glyphosate are stored. So bone can be a bit of a problem. So try to find the cleanest source you can.

Now, you can also feed animal joints that contain both bone and cartilage … these are all natural sources of glucosamine too. My favorite is beef trachea. It's easy to get and it contains a good amount of glucosamine. You can either feed it raw as part of your dog's meals - or you can buy freeze-dried or dehydrated trachea treats. Veal tails are also a good choice, as are rabbit feet and ears. Plus, you can feed those with the fur on because fur is a great source of manganese, an important trace mineral that's also linked to healthy joints. Other good sources of glucosamine are chicken or turkey wings, feet and necks, along with pig feet and tails. But here's a warning - you have to remove the skin. Skin from pork and poultry is incredibly high in pro-inflammatory omega-6 fats. You want to decrease inflammation in your dog, so feeding a lot of omega-6 fats will set you back quite a bit. So just be sure to trim off all the skin if you're using pork or poultry as your source of glucosamine. ABOUT TODAYS VIDEO: 7 Reasons Not To Feed Your Dog Vitamins

Do you feed your dog vitamins to help with health issues or to make sure they're getting what they need?

With your dogs health in mind and how you can do the best for them, let’s take a practical look at whether vitamins are the best investment in your dog’s health.

There are 7 key reasons why (synthetic) vitamins are not the best idea.
1. You may be thinking that the vitamins your dog gets in their kibble are natural. However the vitamins you find in kibble and most supplements are of synthetic form.
2. Synthetic vitamins are made using waste products from petroleum, coal, aluminium and sugar industries to name a few.
3. For example, Vitamin A is made using methanol, petroleum esters, acetylene, benzene and refined fish oil or palm oils. Vitamin C uses hydrogenated sugar processed by acetone. Vitamin D uses irradiated animal fat, cow brains or solvent extraction while B12 is made using cobalt and cyanide!
4. Vitamins are made using the cheapest industrial waste available on the market and they last much longer than their natural counterparts.
5. Natural whole food derived vitamins and synthetic vitamins are like chalk and cheese and your dogs body has trouble recognising synthetic vitamins. Studies have concluded that most synthetic vitamins are expelled from the body as waste being unrecognized as food and treated as toxins. They can also inhibit the ability of natural sources of vitamins to function properly in the body.
6. Synthetic vitamins are hard on your dogs liver as it has to put in overtime filtering out what it sees as toxins and the reason your dogs urine is a strong yellow color and smells of chemicals.
7. 90% of the vitamins in dog kibble in the US are made in China and very little is inspected. China's record on pet food ingredients is a disaster and many pet food recalls have been because of contaminated pet food ingredients from China such as the melamine scandal back in 2007 that killed many thousands of dogs in the US.

Hey guys! Subcutaneous means under the skin and into the fat layer of the skin. The medication administered will be taken up by the small blood vessels in the fat and slowly distributed throughout the body to do its job.
Injections given in the fat tissue are going to have a slower effect or on set time and longer lasting than injections administered in the muscle or even faster if given in the vein or intravenously.
If you need to know how to give an Intramuscular injection, I have made a video on that already and you can find on my page.
OK LETS GET STARTED:
Dog skin may be a lot tougher and looser than human skin. So you will be able to pick up the dogs skin or the SQ layer to inject into it easily.
AREAS YOU WILL BE GIVING THE SQ INJECTIONS:
1) In the shoulder areas of the dog
2) Between the shoulder blades
3) Along the back
4) On the hind legs along the gluteal muscles.
So what you do is you pinch up some skin and then quickly inject into it.
You are going to have to use some FORCE to pierce through the skin. And yes for some people they cant stomach this and they simply go to their veterinarian for assistance.
But for people needing to do this for a dog with Diabetes that need daily insulin injections or dogs that need regular allergy injections which can be administered by an owner.. you may need to get over this fear.

So some people may go “Wait Wait Dr. Lindsay! But online it says you have to draw back to make sure your not in a vein?” Why aren’t you telling us to do that. And my reason is that it is VERY HARD to hit a vein and I have complete confidence that non-of you guys are going to get even close to doing that. It actually takes some skill and knowledge of anatomy to hit a vein in a dog. Also you need to hold off a vein for it to buldge up for you to then inject into it.
Another reason is that if you take the time to draw back .. your dog or cat may move or run away and you will be trying to give them this injection forever.

After so many times doing these SQ injections it will become so easy for you.

Today we are talking about loose teeth in a dog. Have you ever noticed a loose tooth in your dog's mouth. Loose teeth are common in dogs. Loose teeth can happen for a number of different reasons. The tooth may be infected, chronic dental disease, or trauma. All of these cans cause a tooth to go bad!

If this happens to you, take a deep breath. You do need to go see your veterinarian, but do not be surprised if your vet is not surprised. Loose teeth is common in the dog mouth. It needs to be fixed thought.

Your veterinarian will recommended a teeth cleaning and dental x-rays. This will also the vet to examine the bad tooth and make sure there are no other loose teeth in the mouth. Once the vet confirms the tooth is bad, they will extract or remove the tooth. Sometimes they will suture the gums closed to prevent food from getting in the extraction site.

Here's three powerful ways to boost your dogs cognitive abilities, clear the fog and get your dog back on form quickly.

NUMBER 1 Is Exercise.
Maybe your dog is more reluctant to take walks than they used to or gets out of bed a bit slow and stiff. Exercise is crucial to keeping your dogs joints moving and stimulating their senses.

Exercise increases the production of serotonin and dopamine in the brain, making your dog feel happy, calm and balanced while lowering stress throughout the body.

It's really important to get your dog out of the house daily, exercised according to their ability and they'll feel better for it once home again.

NUMBER 2 Is To Feed Your Dog Brain Stimulating Supplements.
Coconut oil is one of the very best super-food medicines you can give to your dog. The MCT's or medium-chain triglycerides derived from coconut oil help improve brain function in senior dogs.

As diet is responsible for 9 out of 10 health issues in dogs there are simple things you can do to help this underlying cause of dementia.

In this video, PDSA Vet Nurse Shauna explains how to care for your dog after surgery:

Step 1 – Rest
Bring your dog home from the vets straight away, without stopping anywhere else, and let them rest in a warm, quiet room away from children, other animals, and noise.

Step 2 – Food
Unless your vet has recommended a special diet, feed them their normal food little and often for the first 24-48 hours, then start feeding them normally again.

Step 3 – Toileting
Keep your dog on a lead when they go out to the toilet. Your dog should be weeing normally but it’s quite normal for them to not poo for a couple of days after surgery.

Step 4 – Medication
Make sure you give your dog all their prescribed medication on time – it can be helpful to use a medication chart to keep track and set alarms to remind you when they’re due the next dose.

Step 5 – Stitches
If your dog has stitches, purchase a protective cone (plastic, fabric or cardboard), an inflatable collar, or a protective body suit to stop them licking at their wound.

Step 6 – Exercise
Until your vet says it’s okay to exercise your dog, keep walks to an absolute minimum and always on a lead.

Step 7 – Check-up appointments
Go to all your dog’s check-up appointments even if they seem to be completely recovered.

Remember to contact your vet if you have any concerns about your dog following surgery. If any of the advice in this video differs from what your vet team has told you, follow their advice which is specific to your dog and the surgery they’ve had.

Just how do you know when is the right time to euthanize your pet and say goodbye? It is one of the hardest decisions you will ever have to make.

There is no right answer but by working through some questions you can work out what quality of life your pet has and this can help you decide if putting your pet to sleep is the right option at this time.

These simple questions include: is your dog in pain? Can your cat climb or jump, is your pet able to run and are they active.

If your pets quality of life is good then that's great. If not though, they may be suffering enough that pet euthanasia may very well be the kindest decision you can make.

Knowing the right time to euthanize your pet is never easy, no matter how sick your pet is. Some statements that I believe may help you if you are still struggling to decide if the time is right to euthanize your pet:

- better a week too early than a day to late
- If you are thinking it might be time then the right time will be very close
- pet euthanasia is the last act of kindness you can show your dog or cat to end their suffering which they don't understand.

Once you've made the decision to put your pet to sleep you should talk to your vet about the process. Can they visit you at home? Would you like to bury your pet or get them cremated? Can you pay before or after the event? What is the process your vet will go through on the day?

Understanding what is going to happen can make to final act of euthanasia a tiny bit more manageable.

Finally, don't be embarrassed by the feelings of grief you have for the loss of your pet. They are an integral part of a family and it is only right you feel as upset as you would over the loss of any other family member.

Great pet health always starts with a healthy heart, so we asked Dr. Carter for some simple suggestions. He give us some of his recommendations on supplements, diets, and exercises for a healthy heart that are easy for you to do right at home (or the dog park!) One question we frequently get from our Chewy friends: How do you get rid of fleas?! Dr. Carter gives us the details on how to find the best flea treatment for your pet whether it’s pills, injections or topical medicine and the possible side effects for each.

You’ve probably heard of CBD oil for anxiety, but does CBD work for pets? Doctor gives us the tea on CBD! And speaking of anxiety, we also found out how to conquer separation anxiety in dogs. Learn how to look for signs of anxiety in dogs and give your stressed dog some much needed relief. Maintaining healthy teeth and gums is a big part of your pet’s health too so we had to ask, should you brush your cat or dog’s teeth? How often? And most important is probably the part your pet looks forward to the least: how often to take your pet to the vet? Veterinary medicine shouldn’t be overlooked and Dr. Carter recommends taking your pet at least once a year. Know what to expect during a routine pet health vet visit? Prepare for a checkup of the whole cat and kaboodle. That means vaccinations, skin and coat health, examinations of the ears and eyes, teeth and a blood and urine test if needed.

I’m sure you are all aware of the disease known as Diabetes, as it is very common to find in humans, but it is also surprisingly common in dogs. It is estimated that anywhere from 1 in 100 to 1 in 500 dogs will develop diabetes somewhere in their lifetime.

And although this is a disease that can easily be managed, if left untreated for too long, it can evolve into a life-threatening condition that can claim your dog’s life within hours.

So make sure to watch this video as I’ll be explaining exactly what diabetes in dogs is as well as what the clinical signs, causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention methods are so that you will be fully equipped to look after your diabetic dog and be able to provide him with the long and healthy life that he deserves.

I have to mention that because of the daily injections and lengthy process of finding the correct dosage, dealing with a dog with Diabetes can become frustrating and expensive and will thus require a pet parent to have a lot of patience.

Diabetes mellitus is unfortunately not a disease that can easily be cured, but with the appropriate treatment plan and lifestyle adjustments, your dog’s health can be kept stable and he may go on to live a fully enjoyable life.

Just remember that it is really important to follow your veterinarian’s guidelines for dosage and timing of the insulin shots as well as meal times and do not stop administering the medication without the prior consent of your veterinarian.

If your dog’s appetite and body weight return to normal and he does not drink or urinates excessively, then it is a positive sign that the disease is being well regulated.

I am a small animal veterinarian who developed a passion for natural medicine while I was living in New Zealand. My vet career was lucky enough to begin in the beautiful country of New Zealand. I was able to see how living off the land by growing our own vegetables and raising our own animals was the way to live the healthiest versions of ourselves. My pets were lucky to have lots of open space to run around in, and we were always at the beach or the river.

When we moved back to the States five years ago, my husband unfortunately developed an autoimmune disease. As we researched natural medicine options for him to avoid the horrible side effects of the treatment options his doctors were providing him, I realized that I was doing a disservice to my animal patients by not offering these holistic options to them. I began down the integrative medicine route, and I have never been happier. Through nutrition, acupuncture, herbal medicine, essential oils, and supplements, every animal can achieve optimal health or feel their best even when they have a chronic illness or disease like cancer. I currently have my certification in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, and I am continuously learning about the other natural modalities and growing my knowledge base every day!

I started this business to provide pet owners with more resources for natural medicine advice and care, because we need to increase awareness of how amazing natural medicine truly is! My mission is to ensure that all pet parents have access to herbal medicine, supplementation and nutritional advice throughout their pet's lifetime. One of my greatest joys is the opportunity to collaborate with both pet parents and other veterinary professionals to ensure access to all available integrative options for pet health care.
